What the evidence says
TMS has FDA clearance for anxious depression (anxiety symptoms within major depression) on one device system, and studies of generalized anxiety disorder show modest benefit with right-sided stimulation. Who might consider it
Adults with anxious depression that has not responded to medications qualify under standard depression criteria and often see anxiety improve alongside mood. For generalized anxiety alone, TMS is offered off label by some clinics after psychotherapy and medication trials.
What treatment looks like
Daily sessions for six weeks; anxiety protocols often use right-sided low-frequency stimulation, which many patients find calming during the session.
Coverage and cost
